Nice Carnival 2026 "Vive la Reine"
Nice Carnival 2026 "Vive la Reine" — A Historic Edition Wraps Up, and Love is Already in the Air for 2027
The confetti has settled on the Promenade des Anglais. The giant papier-mâché heads have returned to their workshops. And as of this Sunday, March 1st, the Nice Carnival 2026 "Vive la Reine!" has officially closed its curtains — leaving behind memories that will be talked about for years to come.
If you were in Nice with your family over the past few weeks, you witnessed history. And if you're already thinking about next year? We have two words for you: "Vive l'Amour".
👑 "Vive la Reine!" — A Record-Breaking, Groundbreaking Edition
This year's carnival made history on multiple fronts. For the first time in the event's 730-year history, a Queen — not a King — ruled over Nice. The theme "Vive la Reine!" was a bold, powerful tribute to the great heroines of history and fiction: the women who shaped our world.
The spectacular "Vive la Reine" floats lighting up Nice's Place Masséna during the 2026 edition.
The Queen herself was no ordinary figure. Designed by artistic director Caroline Constantin, she stood as tall as her male predecessor — a first — and led the parade ahead of the King. With a green crown of flowers, butterflies and birds, and a frog (the future prince consort!) perched on her hand, she embodied Mother Nature in all her power. Regal, symbolic, unforgettable.
The numbers confirm the edition's success: more than 420,000 visitors and Niçois* gathered over the 18 days of festivities — a new record. From the illuminated night parades (corsos illuminés) on the Promenade des Anglais, to the Carnival Village on Square Leclerc with its daily workshops and family activities, to the beloved Bataille de Fleurs, to the Carnavalina street party — there was magic everywhere, for all ages.
And the closing ceremony? It came with a twist. In keeping with the spirit of the edition, Mayor Christian Estrosi made a firm decision: "On ne brûle pas les femmes!" — "We don't burn women!" So in a symbolic break with 150 years of tradition, it was the King consort who was committed to the flames on Saturday, February 28th, followed by a fireworks display above the Baie des Anges. A deeply moving, goosebump moment that summed up everything "Vive la Reine!" stood for.
🎠 Families at the Heart of the Celebration
One of the most beautiful aspects of this edition was how accessible and family-friendly the whole event was. The daytime parades were particularly popular with families with young children — colourful, joyful, and perfectly paced for little ones.
The Carnival Village welcomed visitors every day with free creative workshops, musical performances, and gourmet stands. Children in full costume got free entry to the pedestrian zones of the illuminated corsos — a brilliant tip that many families took full advantage of. And for the very youngest, the afternoon charivari events offered a gentler, crowd-free introduction to the carnival magic.
💛 What's Next: "Vive l'Amour!" in 2027
Before the last float had even disappeared from view, Mayor Estrosi was already looking ahead — and his announcement sent a warm ripple through the crowd.
The Nice Carnival 2027 will run from 9 to 28 February 2027, under the most universal theme imaginable: "Vive l'Amour!" — Long Live Love!
As Estrosi put it: "Since the beginning of time, writers, poets and ordinary people have tried to find the right words for this feeling — sometimes gentle, sometimes burning. With this theme, and with a Queen now equal to the King, we will continue to write the most beautiful pages of the Great Book of Carnival."
After the power of "Vive la Reine!", love feels like the perfect next chapter. Expect floats, costumes, and an atmosphere that will celebrate romance, connection, and joy in all its forms — perfectly timed for February, the month of Valentine's Day.
Mark your calendars: 9–28 February 2027.
Tickets will go on sale on the official site later in the year.
